Protesters hand in hand at a march in Cape Town

Mama Zihlangu and Andrew ‘Willie’ Hofmeyr at a service in support of 'ex-restrictees'. This was a Defiance Campaign against the apartheid state’s Emergency Regulations. As part of the Campaign, restricted people defied their restriction orders intentionally as an act of organised passive resistance.

Protest against Police brutality in Pietermaritzburg.

On the morning of Saturday 21 October 1989, the women of Pietermaritzburg protested against police brutality and, in particular, the placing of razor wire around St Albans Cathedral in Pretoria on the 23rd of September. St Peter's Church was surrounded with protestors as part of this action.
